Teaching aims:

1. Knowledge and skills

1) Improve the students’ speaking ability by talking.

2) Enlarge the students’ vocabulary.

1) Talking to improve the students’ speaking ability.

2) Practice to get the students to master what they have learnt.

The students are not only to expand their knowledge of abstract nouns and words related to computers but to use it skillfully as well.

Important points:

1. Help students understand how to form abstract nouns from verbs and adjectives.

2. Help students learn more words related to computers and try to use them.

Difficult points:

1. Enlarge the students’ vocabulary by remembering some words.

2. How to explain the word formation of forming abstract nouns from verbs and adjectives.

 

Teaching procedures:

Step 1 Greetings

Greet as usual.

Step 2 American slang

Fat cat

Ask students some questions related to the slang, like:

Do you know the meaning of this phrase? Can you guess the exact meaning of it?

Students may answer the questions freely.

The right answer: someone quite rich and really successful.

Step 3 Forming abstract nouns from verbs and adjectives

1. Compare the following two groups of words:

Group 1: house, milk, driver, games;

Group 2: revision, preparation, decision, production.

Which part of speech is each word?

Think about the similarities and differences between the two groups.

After discussion, students must can find the answers by referring to the text book.

Answers: All the words are nouns, but words in Group1 refer to physical things and those in Group2 refer to ideas, actions, and qualities. The nouns in Group2 are called abstract nouns, and we always use them to say something we can not see or touch directly.

2. Explanation

An abstract noun is a noun that refers to an idea, an action, a general quality or something that we can not see or touch directly, e.g., excitement.

Most abstract nouns are uncountable. Only a few of them are countable, e.g., a hope, an idea and a situation.

We can form abstract nouns from some verbs and adjectives by adding suffixes.

We sometimes need to change the final letter(s) of a word before adding the suffix.

3. Change the following words into nouns by adding suffixes.

produce, decide, please, patient, necessary, real, safe, happy, important, refer, enjoy, admire, fail, read, connect, cold.

The answers: production, decision, pleasure, patience, necessity, reality, safety, happiness, importance, reference, enjoyment, admiration, failure, reading, connection, coldness.

4. Read about the history of one of the word’s most successful online businesses. Complete the article by forming abstract nouns from the verbs and adjectives in brackets. Use plural forms when necessary.

Jeff Bezos has played an important role in the (1)_____________(develop) of Amazon .com, an online shop selling mainly book and music. He decided to set up Amazon .com when he saw the growing (2) ________(popular) of the Internet.

During the first few years, the company did not make a profit and Mr. Bezos thought that his efforts would end in (3) _______(fail). However, Internet (4)__________ (connect) became faster and a lot of (5) _____________ (improve) were made to home computers.

Soon Amazon .com began to make money and now has the most impressive online (6) ____________ (present) in the world. Mr. Bezos’(7) ___________ (achieve) has encouraged many other people to start online businesses. He has now won the (8) ___________ (admire) of business people everywhere.

The answers: development, popularity, failure, connection, improvements, presentation, achievement, admiration

Step 4 Words related to computers

1. Name the different parts of a computer:

mouse, screen, keyboard, hard drive, mouse mat, CD-ROM/DVD-ROM, printer, speaker, floppy disk, U-Disk, monitor, CD-ROM/DVD-ROM drive, floppy disk drive, TIP:

ROM means Read Only Memory.

RAM means Random Access Memory.

CPU is the Central Processing Unit.
