Teaching aims:
After learning project, the students will be able to
1. have a clear and further understanding of Chinese acupuncture and Chinese medicine;
2. learn some useful phrases and sentence structures in the text;
3. develop their ability of reading a report;
4. raise their awareness of cherishing Chinese medicine.
Teaching procedures:
Step 1 Lead in
Lead in the topic about Chinese acupuncture and Chinese medicine by showing students some pictures.
Step 2 Fast reading
Read the article quickly and talk about the structure of it:
Para 1: the history of Chinese acupuncture
Paras 2-3: the development of Chinese acupuncture
Para 4: the treatment of medical problems by using Chinese acupuncture
Paras 5-7: the benefits and the acceptance in the West
Step 3 Careful reading
Read the article carefully and try to answer the following questions:
1. When did Chinese acupuncture begin?
2. How does an acupuncturist examine a patient?
3. How many pulses are there and what are they connected with?
4. Why will an acupuncturist check pulses?
5. What medical problems can acupuncture treat?
6. How does acupuncture reduce pain?
Step 4 Deal with the language points
1. Find out the impotant phrases
2. Discuss the following sentences in your group:
a. There is evidence that acupuncture began during the Stone Age, when stone tools called Bian were used to press areas of the body.(lines3-4)
b. One theory explaining this phenomenon suggests that acupuncture blocks pain signals from reaching the brain. (lines 39-41)
c. Another theory relates acupuncture to the production of chemicals in the body which reduce pain. A lot of people now subscribe to these theories.(Lines 41-43)
