Butterfly Kisses公开课教学设计

设计意图(教学目的):
By the end of the class, students will be able to:
1. Read, understand and appreciate the moving story: A woman’s transition from an unsure young girl to a confident woman, mother, speaker and author.
2.     Acquire target words including harsh, verbal, abuse, skinny, blossom, transition, pierce in the process of reading.
3.     Deepen the comprehension of the theme through the reading strategy: Find out hidden meaning behind details.
4.     Write a paragraph to consolidate the usage of target words and make some sentences to gain some insight into love.

Butterfly Kisses
[1]My newlywed husband said the same thing every morning. "You're beautiful today."
[2]One glance in the mirror revealed that it was far from the truth.
[3]A skinny girl with mashed hair on one side of her head and no makeup smiled back at me. I could feel my sticky morning breath.
[4] “Liar,” I shot back with a grin.
[5]It was my usual response. My mother's first husband was not a kind man and his verbal and physical abuse forced her and her two children to find a safe place. He showed up on her doorstep one day with roses. She let him in and he beat her with those roses and took advantage of her. Nine months later she gave birth to a 5 lb. 13 oz. baby girl -- me.
[6]The harsh words we heard growing up took root. I had trouble seeing myself as someone of value.
[7] I had been married two years when I surprised myself. My husband wrapped his arms around me and told me I was beautiful.
[8] “Thank you,” I said.
[9] The same thin girl with the mousy brown hair still stared back at me in the mirror, but somehow the words had finally blossomed in my heart.
[10]A lot of years have passed. My husband has grey in his hair. I'm no longer skinny. Last week I woke up and my husband's face was inches from mine.
[11] “What are you doing?” I asked.
[12]I covered my mouth, trying to hide my morning breath. He reached down and kissed my face.
[13] “What I do every morning,” he said.
[14]He leaves in the early hours of the morning while I sleep. I miss our morning conversations, but I had not realized that he continued to tell me that he loved me even while I slept. When he left, I rolled over and hugged my pillow. I envisioned the picture of me lightly snoring with my mouth open and giggled.
[15]What a man! My husband understands my past. He's been beside me as I've grown from an unsure young girl to a confident woman, mother, speaker and author.
[16]But I'm not sure that he understands the part he played in that transition. The words I heard growing up pierced my soul, yet his words pierced even deeper.
[17]This Anniversary Day I plan to wake early. I want to tell Richard how much I love him. He may look in the mirror and see an extra pound or two, or wish for the day when his hair was dark and curly, but all I'll see is the man who saw something in me when I couldn't see it myself, and who leaves butterfly kisses, even after twenty-three years of marriage.

Step 1Lead-in
1. Listen to the song “Butterfly Kisses” and lead to the topic: love 2. Ask the following questions:
What is love?
Who makes you feel loved?
What makes you feel loved?
通过课前播放碟吻的歌曲,引出这堂课的主题:爱。并通过进一步的提问得出爱是一种能力,为后续的阅读埋下铺垫,同时激发了学生的阅读兴趣。
Step 2 Fast Reading
1.Scan the passage and answer two questions:
a. What are the main characters in the story?
b. What is the story about?
2.Match the main idea of each paragraph
粗读文章,理清文本人物和情感。
找出文章的时间线索,划分段落。
Step 3 Detailed Reading
1.Read the passage and find out information according to the time:

2. Talk about the reading strategy                                              and understand the hidden meanings of sentences by learning target words.
3. Critical thinking
Q: What do you think is the best title of this story? Why?
1.     细读文章,以时间为线索,找出作者从自我否定到自信的蜕变过程。培养学生在阅读中查找有用信息的能力。
2.     指导学生阅读策略:通过细节的描写来表达深层意义。同时教授目标词汇,帮助学生理解文中部分句子的隐含意义。
3.     通过让学生选出文章的最佳标题,进一步体会文章主题:爱的力量。
Step 4Consolidation: writing
Suppose you are the writer, please write something to express     love to the husband within 50 words.( Try to use the target words)
 
使用目标词汇写一段话的形式,让学生巩固所学词汇,学以致用。
Step 5 Group Work
1. What’s the power of love?
2. What’s love to you?
 
通过小组讨论的方式,以造句的形式让学生领悟爱是什么,并学习表达爱。进一步深化主题。
Step6 Assignment
1. Appreciate two short passages about parents’ love.
2. Try to express your love to people around you.
 
拓展阅读,巩固所学。
